In the United States in 1907, Indiana became the first of more than thirty states to have laws implementing sterilization of individuals deemed unfit. Some 60,000 people were sterilized in the United States until these laws were changed. The State of North Carolina is considering to compensate victims by offering each a $50,000 settlement.
